Odd Arrests of 1683 - 1686 in Essex Co., MA Samuel Lumas was before the court in Ipswich, MA in 1683 for "abusing a hog valued at 30s. so that it died." He apparently threw rocks at the hog until he broke one of it's legs. Sergt. Thomas Waite was a naughty boy. He was presented to the court for "frequenting the company of Sara Godwin at unseasonable times." Joseph Gatchell was presented for saying "vile words" of Mr. Gidnie to John Lambert. He also committed the offense of carrying a "lighter of wood" when he should've been at church. Robart Nicholls and his wife Annis had an early fencing operation. They would "entertain" the servants from other households, who brought objects that belonged to those households to the Nicholls'. Another charge says they received stolen turkeys, pipes, sugar and liquors from these servants and that they tried to get them to steal more for them. They also refused to come to church. John Hunniwell was a pre-revolutionary revolutionary. He made the mistake of saying "We in New England were not his majesty's faithfull subjects but Rebels." Fornicators:
