Odd Arrests of 1683 - 1686 in Essex Co., MA

Samuel Lumas was before the court in Ipswich, MA in 1683 for "abusing a hog valued at 30s. so that it died." He apparently threw rocks at the hog until he broke one of it's legs.

Sergt. Thomas Waite was a naughty boy. He was presented to the court for "frequenting the company of Sara Godwin at unseasonable times."

Joseph Gatchell was presented for saying "vile words" of Mr. Gidnie to John Lambert. He also committed the offense of carrying a "lighter of wood" when he should've been at church.

Robart Nicholls and his wife Annis had an early fencing operation. They would "entertain" the servants from other households, who brought objects that belonged to those households to the Nicholls'. Another charge says they received stolen turkeys, pipes, sugar and liquors from these servants and that they tried to get them to steal more for them. They also refused to come to church.

John Hunniwell was a pre-revolutionary revolutionary. He made the mistake of saying "We in New England were not his majesty's faithfull subjects but Rebels."

Fornicators:
Charges were usually that the guilty either be whipped or pay a fine.

William Worme and Hannah Adams of Newbury. (Later married)

Hanna Tiler, whose sentence was to pay a Mr. King.

Daniel Keaten, a.k.a. Capen and his wife (for before they were married)

Nathanill Carill and the Widow Willsone. They were only accused of living together in one house, close enough.

Elizabeth Drinker of Beverly, she accused Joseph Grant of being her child's father.

Susannah Hall of Beverly, she accused Francis Pierce of being her child's father.

Robert Bond and his wife Lucy of Salem (Later married).

William Cox and Susannah Lawrence, they had a secret room where she would "entertain" him. The real problem whas that she was married with a living husband. She was presented later for being with William Cox in "a scandalous manner on the Sabbath day."

Robart Lasken and his wife Joan.

Henry Britten and his wife Sarah.

Hugh Gay and his wife Elie.

John Brown and Ruth Hewes, both of Newbury.

Hugh Matthews and Mary Emerson, both of Newbury. (Later married)

Hannah Whitcher of Haverhill.

Ruth Griffin, formerly of Boston, then at Salisbury. Her co-fornicator, Edward Belcher of Boston, said he'd marry her after he returned from sea. But ditched her and fled to England instead.

Robert Laskin and his wife Joan of Ipswich.
