These are mostly letters written by my great great great grandfather, Dennis Ford, to his wife, Mary (Moriarty) Ford in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Dennis came to America from County Kerry, Ireland around 1853. His original last name was Foran (possibly Forehand or Fourihan) which is alluded to in these and other letters. He changed it to Ford upon coming to America

He was a Private in the Civil War. Member of 28 Reg. Company H, Massachusetts Volunteers. Enlisted 12/17/1861; mustered Jan 3, 1862; missing 7/3/1863, Gettysburg, Penn.; Prisoner 8/16/1864 Charles City, Cross Roads, Virginia; exchanged 11/27/1864; discharged to date 12/19/1864. Also member of 14th Battery Mass. Volunteers Light Artillery; enlisted and mustered 2/28/1865;taken prisoner 3/25/1865 near Petersburg, VA; paroled and joined Battery 5/20/1865; mustered 6/15/1865.

He fought at Battle of James Island June 16, 1862, 2nd Battle of Bull Run Aug. 29 and 30, 1862, Chantilly Sep. 1, 1862, South Mountain Sep. 14, 1862, Antietam Creek Sep 17, 1862, Fredericksburg Dec. 11, 12, and 13, 1862, Chancellorsville. Taken prisoner 3rd day of Gettysburg Jul. 3, 1863, again at Charles City Crossroads, VA Aug 16, 1864, and again March 25, 1865 in camp near Petersburg.

He died on July 26, 1868 in Haverhill, MA of Consumption
